Growing Roses for Beginners - Tips for Growing Beautiful Roses
Bright beautiful roses, tall lengthy roses, money on trees; these three things are very hard to grow. We all wish we could grow money on trees but lets stick to something that can be done to brighten up your landscape. Of course if we could grow money on trees we could all have bright, beautiful, tall roses since we would all have the money to pay for gardeners, but lets get back to reality. Roses are one of the more difficult plants/flowers to grow. Roses as they grow out are tall with thin stems along with very delicate petals. Roses require lots of sunlight and good watering daily.
At this point you may be thinking, it is not possible for me to grow bright beautiful roses. Not True. Growing roses is now for beginners. All that is necessary is a few simple tips to get you started.
Lets start at the beginning and just let the flower bloom as we go.
Roses require lots of sunlight, typically around 6-7 hours of sunlight a day to grow big and healthy. So find the best place to plant your flowers that will have around this amount of sunlight. I recommend planting roses on the east side of a building. Plants are like you and I and can burn if not properly handled. Planting roses on the east side of a building or some other tall object will give them the light they need in the morning time when the heat is not quite what it will be at about 5 P.M. on the west side of the building.
So now that we have picked the location lets prepare it. First we need to check the soil. Is it good soil for roses? We need to check the pH level of the soil, optimal levels for roses averages around 6.
Roses are short rooted plants so there will not be much competition between the roses when growing so feel free to plant them closer together. A good space would be 4-6 inches apart. Take into account how big the roses will be when fully blossomed and use your best judgment.
Now what about the area you will be planting in? Well as stated earlier roses are short root plants. Competition with weeds can be hard on a rose and more than likely they will die out. I recommend laying down a layer of 3-4 inches of mulch in your garden bed. This will eliminate the competition between roses and weeds and lets face it, leave your garden smelling better and looking healthier.
When planting roses many people will tend to plant multiples of the same color right next to each other. This will possibly end up looking like a circus if you plan to plant more than one color. Make some variety. Mix it up. Stick complementary colors next to each other and it will give your garden a better flow and a better over-all look.
Roses will grow to be tall thin stemmed flowers as mentioned above so you will need to support the stems as they grow.
